Mulak School

Mulak School joined the Greening Islands School Project with the aim to expand their existing school garden as well as to create opportunities to make their school more sustainable. For three years now, Mulak School has consistently maintained their school garden, while actively integrating it with their lessons. The teachers have observed that through the garden, students are more engaged in learning and understand the lesson quicker.

Teaching garden activities:

• Grade 1 and 2 students have observed and measured the growth of the plants in the garden
• Grade 2 students did writing observations and forming hypotheses on the plants
• Grade 2 students implemented the ‘Layers of the Soil’ activity
• Grade 2 and 3 students completed one month research project on the plants they grew themselves
• Teaching activities on measurement, observing the growth, photosynthesis, and layers and types of soil

Garden activities:

• Planting and harvesting lady fingers, maize, cucumber, coriander, tomato, chili
• Science and Nature Club held a fundraising project through selling cucumbers and lettuce from the school garden

Composting activities:

• Grade 5 students added organic matter to the plants, making mini compost to fertilise the plants
